Golf / Shav Glick : Women’s Municipal Event Is This Week

Two of Los Angeles’ oldest municipal tournaments, the 63rd women’s championship and the 68th men’s championship, will take over the local scene during the next two weeks.

The women will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Rancho Park course, and the men will play two weekends, June 7-8 and June 14-15, at four city courses.

Last year, Bobby Lasken, 19, of Whittier, and Pearl Sinn, 17, of Bellflower were the winners. Lasken, now attending UCLA, set a 72-hole tournament record of 275, 11 under par, when he finished six strokes ahead of Tom Stankowski.

The men’s championship field is limited to the first 144 entries. The deadline to enter is Friday.

Play will be on the Encino and Rancho Park courses the first weekend and on the Griffith Park courses, Wilson and Harding, the next Saturday and Sunday.

Both tournaments are sponsored by the L.A. City Recreation and Parks Dept. and will be conducted by the Municipal Golf Assn.

Also in June, the 11 Los Angeles city-operated courses will be hosting a program to raise funds for camperships for disadvantaged youths and to assist the city’s junior golf program.

Each city course player, on given days, will be asked to donate $1 for each tee shot on a par-3 hole. New balls will be given players whose shot lands within a 30-foot circle.

The program, scheduled for June 21-22 and June 28-29, raised $3,644 last year.
