Tim Richmond outlasted Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip to win the Winn-Dixie 300 NASCAR Grand National stock car race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Harrisburg, N.C.
Richmond drove his Pontiac at a record 139.715 m.p.h. around the 1.5-mile quad-oval for $37,200 and became the first to win two straight races in the event’s nine-year history.
Meanwhile, Richard Petty, who suffered a mild concussion and a bruised leg when he crashed on Friday during a practice session for today’s Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte speedway, was released from a hospital.
It was not known if Petty had received medical permission to race today.
