NEW YORK — An estimated 3,000 homeless City University students are using streets, subways and shelters as dorms, and the city should provide temporary off-campus housing to handle the growing number of needy undergraduates, officials said today.
City University Chancellor Joseph Murphy said 150 students at Bronx Community College are homeless, and he arrived at the 3,000 figure by extrapolating from the Bronx number and speaking with the presidents of the system’s 21 colleges. Only two of the schools have on-campus housing.
