Pakistan said it shot down an Afghan military plane and hit another violating its airspace. According to a Pakistani Foreign Ministry official, the incident--possibly the first downing of an Afghan plane over Pakistan since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December, 1979--occurred when four Afghan planes crossed the border near the town of Parachinar. The official said Pakistan will file a protest with Afghanistan. It was not known whether the jets were attacked by the Pakistani air force or by ground fire.
