LAGOS, Nigeria — Pop idol and political figure Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, freed from a Nigerian prison, called Sunday for early elections to end military rule.
Fela, 47, clad in his old prison uniform with a chain around his neck, launched a two-hour attack on Nigeria’s former rulers, their corruption, the country’s prison system and the high crime rate.
Fela, who has a wide youth following in this West African nation and who makes singing appearances worldwide, was jailed in November, 1984, after being found guilty of breaching foreign-exchange control regulations.
