Norwegian Labor Party Accepts Bid to Form Government

OSLO — Norwegian Labor Party leader Gro Harlem Brundtland agreed today to form a minority government after the ruling three-party conservative coalition resigned.
Brundtland told reporters she had accepted a formal invitation from Norway’s King Olav V to form a government.
Outgoing Prime Minister Kare Willoch, who resigned today over a defeat in Parliament on economic austerity policies, will head a caretaker government until Brundtland takes over next week.
“Forming a minority government is a No. 2 solution as far as I am concerned, but we will do what we can to fulfill our responsibilities to the Norwegian people,” Brundtland said.
Brundtland, prime minister for eight months before being defeated by Willoch in 1981, said she would choose her Cabinet in the next few days.
