Arcadia : Joint Elections Urged
The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education has passed a resolution supporting consolidation of school board and City Council elections. Currently the school board election is held in April in odd-numbered years and the City Council election in April in even-numbered years. The resolution suggests that the consolidated elections be held in November of odd-numbered years, beginning in 1987. The change is subject to voter approval. The City Council has not taken a stand on the proposal.
Among the advantages listed by the board are cost savings, increased voter turnout and avoidance of elections during school spring vacations. Last month the City Council election was held during spring vacation and voter turnout was only 22%, compared with a normal turnout of 33%.
