Wilmington : Oil Well Appearance Rules

The Los Angeles City Council’s Planning and Environment Committee has unanimously asked the city staff to devise a method for tightening aesthetic requirements at oil wells in the Wilmington area.
Current regulations governing the area’s estimated 655 wells are outdated and too lenient, said Nelson Hernandez, aide to Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores. Flores, representative for the harbor area, initiated the city’s study of the regulations.
The new regulations could include requirements for fencing and landscaping property where oil wells are located, Hernandez said. About 80% of the wells are owned or operated by Exxon Co. USA, he said.
