A suspected border bandit was shot to death and another was seriously wounded in a gun battle with American law enforcement officers along the Mexican border near San Diego. A four-man team from the joint police-Border Patrol Border Crimes Task Force intercepted the suspects as they allegedly were robbing a group of illegal aliens in a darkened canyon 200 yards inside the United States, police said. The officers opened fire when the suspects pointed weapons at them, police said. The wounded man was airlifted to the UC San Diego Medical Center. Names of the suspects were withheld.
