UCI, Orange Coast Crews Dominate at Newport Regatta

UC Irvine won the varsity eight competition and Orange Coast College won four of the five races it entered as the two played host to the annual Newport Regatta Sunday on North Lido Channel. OCC’s novice eight crew ran its record to 19-0, with its victory over San Diego State, UCLA, Cal State Long Beach and Loyola Marymount on the 2,000-meter course.

OCC tied with UCLA for the P.A. (Pappy) Palmer Cup for overall point total.

UCI won the varsity eight race with a time of 6:01.40 to Long Beach’s 6:02.18. UCLA was a distant third at 6:10.53 and San Diego State was fourth. OCC’s junior varsity eight had the biggest margin of victory of the day with a time ot 6:03.34.
