Deaver Briefings by Commerce Dept. Probed
WASHINGTON — A House panel investigating the lobbying activities of Michael K. Deaver said Monday that it wants the Commerce Department to explain why it gave a series of economic briefings to the former White House aide.
The House Energy and Commerce oversight and investigation subcommittee, headed by Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), received information that Deaver was briefed last year on a wide range of economic subjects, said Michael F. Barrett Jr., the panel’s chief counsel.
Barrett said the panel wants to determine if Deaver got access to data that helped in his lobbying efforts. Michael K. Deaver & Associates represents the governments of Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Mexico and Saudi Arabia, as well as a number of foreign companies. Deaver could not be reached for comment.
