Tennis Roundup : Jarryd Beats Nystrom in Quarterfinals
Anders Jarryd upset fourth-seeded Joakim Nystrom, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the $500,000 WCT Finals at Dallas Thursday night.
In another match, third-seeded Stefan Edberg defeated Yannick Noah, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6.
Jarryd will meet top-seeded Mats Wilander tonight.
In his semifinal match Saturday, Edberg will meet the winner of tonight’s match between second-seeded Boris Becker and ninth-seeded Paul Annacone.
“This is better than I have played in a couple of years,” Jarryd said. “If I play this well tomorrow, I think I’ll have a chance against Wilander.”
Noah took a 3-1 lead in the first tiebreaker against Edberg but promptly lost six straight points. Edberg had an easier time in the second tiebreaker, winning it, 7-4.
At Hilton Head Island, S.C., top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd and second-seeded Hana Mandlikova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Family Circle tournament.
But fourth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany was upset by Sabrina Goles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Lloyd defeated 16-year-old Helen Kelesi of Canada, 6-4, 6-1, in a third-round match, while Mandlikova breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kate Gompert.
In other matches, third-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tine Scheuer-Larsen of Denmark, and Stephanie Rehe defeated Zina Garrison, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
