Gifford’s Talent Wasted as a Commentator

Roone Arledge is right about Frank Gifford “having the single toughest role in all of sports” (TV-Radio Column, March 28), but he was wrong about what the toughest job in all of sports is.
For 14 mornings in 1984, Gifford shared the Olympic anchor desk with Kathleen Sullivan without ever (1) laughing out loud, (2) throttling her, or (3) asking her why the hell she was wearing a fluffy Angora sweater in the middle of the summer in Los Angeles.
That kind of self-control should allow Gifford to write his own ticket at ABC forever.
