68 Die of AIDS, 75 New Cases Listed in S.F. in Month

SAN FRANCISCO — Sixty-eight people died of AIDS in San Francisco in March, the highest number ever recorded for a single month, according to the city Health Department.
Figures released Tuesday also showed that there were 75 new cases of AIDS reported during March, down from 101 new cases in February. But the city Health Commission was told that the AIDS caseload in San Francisco may double before it starts to level off next year.
The number of AIDS patients will increase from the present estimate of about 900 to approximately 1,600 by 1987, said John A. Newmeyer of the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic.
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome cripples the body’s immune system, leaving the victim vulnerable to infections and cancers. It is most likely to strike male homosexuals, abusers of injectable drugs and hemophiliacs.
