PEKING — Fireworks explosions in China last year killed 578 people and injured 1,639, the worst year on record, the China Law newspaper reported Monday.
The paper said the worst single accident occurred in April last year at a fireworks factory in the northern city of Taiyuan, where a blast killed 83 people. It said two-thirds of the explosions occurred in factories in rural areas and called for improvements in safety controls.
