Orange County Prep Baseball : Mission Viejo Upsets Santa Ana to Reach Final

Mission Viejo High School, the 10th-ranked team in Orange County, upset fourth-ranked Santa Ana, 9-5, Monday in the semifinals of the Santa Ana Elks Tournament at Rancho Santiago College.

The Diablos (9-3) will face Banning in today’s championship game at 3 p.m. at Rancho Santiago College.

The Saints managed just four hits in the game. Diablo pitcher Matt Lackie entered the game in the top of the fourth and held Santa Ana to one hit in the last four innings. It was Lackie’s second win of the day. Earlier, he had come into the quarterfinal game against Garden Grove in relief, limited the Argonauts to two hits in three innings and earned credit for a 7-3 victory.

The Diablos scored four times in the third inning against Santa Ana pitcher John Hefler to take a 6-3 advantage. Mission Viejo’s Marc Preston went 3 for 4, and David Hori went 2 for 3, including a double. Hefler was the losing pitcher, but he was Santa Ana’s leading hitter with a two-run double. Teammate Jaime Franco had a solo homer.

In other semifinal action:

Banning 4, Irvine 3--The Pilots scored two in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the Vaqueros, 3-3, and another in the seventh to win and advance to today’s championship game against Mission Viejo.

In championship quarterfinal action:

Santa Ana 10, El Toro 9 (six innings)--The Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on errors to defeat the Chargers at Santa Ana High. John Hefler had two hits for the Saints, and Adam Brass added two more, including an inside-the-park home run, and three RBIs for El Toro.

Irvine 4, Saddleback 1--Brian Snoddy, who hasn’t walked a batter in three games, went the distance on a five-hitter and struck out three to lead the Vaqueros past the Roadrunners. Mike Moceri, Jeff Walters and Brian Brocoff each had two hits for Irvine.

Mission Viejo 7, Garden Grove 3--The Diablos had a five-run fifth inning highlighted by right fielder Marc Preston’s three-run triple. Mission Viejo reliever Matt Lackie allowed two hits in the last three innings. The Argonauts’ Donny Lockman went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Mark Kiefer, the losing pitcher, went 2 for 4.

In consolation semifinal action:

Los Alamitos 13, Foothill 5--Mark Wolfe went 4 for 5 with a two-run homer, three singles and four RBIs to lead the Griffins past the Knights at Saddleback High. Kevin Jeanotte also had a home run and a double for Los Alamitos (8-5).

In fifth-place semifinal action:

El Toro 6, Garden Grove 0--Vic Nodvedt went the distance on a five-hitter, and Chad Fouts had two hits to help the Chargers defeat the Argonauts.

Katella 11, Saddleback 5--Jeff Repoz had two hits, including a homer, and four RBIs to lead the Knights past the Roadrunners at El Modena High. Todd Lloyd added three hits, and Darren Okuda and Brad Harker each had two hits and two RBIs for Katella.

In consolation quarterfinal action:

Foothill 6, Orange 0--Mike Pope went all the way on a four-hitter, and Frank Governale had two hits to lead the Knights past the Panthers at Saddleback High.

Los Alamitos 7, Santa Ana Valley 6 (eight innings)--Brooks Peters’ sacrifice fly scored Robbie Katzaroff with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Griffins defeated the Falcons at Hart Park.

Long Beach Millikan 1, Villa Park 0--The Rams scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning. Winning pitcher Bob Crane held the Spartans to four hits. Jeff Komma, who allowed five hits, was the loser.

In other consolation action:

Orange 6, Santa Ana Valley 5--The Panthers took a 6-0 advantage in the second inning against losing pitcher Pete Perez. The Falcons (4-8) nearly made a comeback, scoring three runs in the seventh inning and leaving the bases loaded. Frank Talafus was the winning pitcher, giving up two hits in four innings. Orange’s Dave Schill had two hits, including a two-run homer. For the Falcons, Carlos Lopez went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Villa Park 18, Long Beach Jordan 5--Chris Bell went 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and four runs, John Genova went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and Craig Pollard went 4 for 5 with three runs scored to lead the Spartans (3-10) to the win.

BOLSA GRANDE TOURNAMENT

In championship quarterfinal action:

Rancho Alamitos 7, Santiago 2--Jeff Collier allowed two hits over 6 innings and struck out three to help the Vaqueros defeat the Cavaliers. Rancho Alamitos advances to today’s semifinals against La Quinta.

La Quinta 2, La Mirada 1--Sophomore Mike Wilson (2-1) pitched seven innings, allowed just four hits and struck out eight as the Aztecs (4-6) upset the Matadores at Los Amigos. The Aztecs, who had 15 hits but stranded 12 baserunners, scored the winning run in the sixth inning when Larry Fettis drove in John Park with a single.

Capistrano Valley 9, John Glenn 2--Brett Snyder went the distance on a six-hitter and struck out eight to lead the Cougars to the win at Bolsa Grande High. Marcel Durand went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Tommy Adams added two hits and an RBI for Capistrano Valley (5-4).

Pacifica 12, Leuzinger 3--The Mariners won at Pacifica High to advance to the semifinals against Capistrano Valley.

In consolation quarterfinal action:

Bolsa Grande 3, Estancia 0--Curtis went all the way on a five-hitter and struck out seven, and Chris Tapia went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as the Matadors (5-4) defeated the Eagles at Bolsa Grande High to advance to the consolation semifinals.

Los Amigos 4, Orange Lutheran 0--Joe Jaglowski (1-1) pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine as the Lobos (2-8) advanced to today’s consolation semifinals. Los Amigos’ Kenny Hansen had two hits and one RBI. The loser was Scott Wire, who gave up five hits.

Artesia 4, Costa Mesa 2--The Pioneers took advantage of two Mustang fielding errors in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs (2-6) scored once in the bottom of the second and again in the fourth. Mike Suruki went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Costa Mesa. Scott Snedecker was the losing pitcher, allowing six hits.

In first-round action:

John Glenn 2, Bolsa Grande 1 (eight innings)--With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Memu Lazalde reached on an error and then scored on another error to help the Eagles past the Matadors at Bolsa Grande High.

Santiago 13, Santa Fe 5--Joe Marquez went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, and Ricardo Gallardo went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Cavaliers past the Chiefs at Rancho Alamitos High.

La Quinta 7, Orange Lutheran 1--Troy Paulsen had two hits and two RBIs as the Aztecs beat the Lancers at Los Amigos. Pitcher Randy McGlenn went the distance for the win, giving up seven hits. La Quinta’s Tim Park went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, and teammate Guillermo Alcantar went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Capistrano Valley 10, Estancia 4--Tommy Adams went 3 for 5 with an RBI, Marcel Durand went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Nathan Call had a double, triple and an RBI to help the Cougars defeat the Eagles at Bolsa Grande High.

La Mirada 15, Los Amigos 3--The Matadores scattered 16 hits against Lobos pitchers Kenny Luckham and Philip Cordova at Los Amigos.

POMONA TOURNAMENT

In championship second-round action:

Sonora 6, Workman 3--Brian Needham threw a four-hitter to lead the Raiders past the Lobos in the second round at Mt. San Antonio College.

Cerritos 4, Ocean View 0--The Seahawks had only four hits, committed three errors and were eliminated from the tournament at Pomona High. Losing pitcher Craig Anderson allowed four hits and struck out five in 6 innings.

In first-round action:

Sonora 10, Claremont 7--Rob Stuart went 3 for 4 with a triple and a home run, and Brian Miller went 3 for 4 with a homer to lead the Raiders past the Wolfpack at Mt. San Antonio College.

Ocean View 2, South Hills 0--Mike Fyhre had an RBI double in the fifth inning and later scored on a passed ball to lead the Seahawks. Brett Johnson went six innings for the win, and Brent Knackert pitched the seventh for a save.

West Covina 2, Western 1--The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Pioneers (7-3).

In consolation second-round action:

Western 7, Compton 1--Dan Price had two doubles and two RBIs, and Paul Boucher added two hits and two RBIs to help the Pioneers to the win. Eric Kawamoto pitched four innings to earn the victory.

WEST ANAHEIM LIONS CLUB TOURNAMENT In championship semifinal action:

Canyon 5, San Francisco Riordon 0--Wayne Elmore pitched a complete-game two-hitter, and the Comanches made the most of five hits to defeat Riordon in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium and advance to tonight’s championship game. Joe Furukawa had two hits for Canyon (6-4).

Fullerton 6, Woodbridge 0--Jerry Sanchez went all the way on a four-hitter and struck out six, and Steve Pearson hit a two-run homer in the second inning to lead the Indians past the Warriors in Glover Stadium. Fullerton plays Canyon tonight at 7 for the championship.

NORTH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY TOURNAMENT Capistrano Valley Christian 1, Santa Ynez 0--James Padilla pitched well, allowing six hits while striking out five and walking none at Santa Ynez in Solvang. The Eagles scored the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh when Basie Nunez came home on Jay Hawthorne’s sacrifice fly.

Whittier Christian 6, Dana Hills 3--The Heralds beat the Dolphins to advance to today’s game against Capistrano Valley Christian at 11 a.m. at Santa Ynez.
