Preliminary tests on mice suggest that the oil that creates the pungent odor in garlic and onions may help prevent cancer, a Houston scientist reported. “People have believed over centuries and thousands of years that the odors from onions and garlic can protect you,” said Michael J. Wargovich of the M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. Early results of a study currently under way using mice indicate that garlic inhibits the growth of tumors, Wargovich told an American Cancer Society seminar in Daytona Beach, Fla.
