Local News in Brief : Saugus Man Charged in Assault at Dairy
Acharge of attempted murder has been filed against a Saugus man for allegedly running over the owner of a drive-through dairy with his motor home after an argument.
Lou Watnick, head of the district attorney’s Newhall office, said Thomas Edward Powell, 35, also will be arraigned April 11 on one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felony hit-and-run driving.
Joos Kwon, 52, the owner of the Alta-Dena Dairy in the 18700 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Valencia, suffered multiple skull fractures March 9 when he was hit by a motor home driven by Powell, Watnick said.
Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that Powell’s vehicle hit and damaged an awning as he drove up to the dairy’s window, Watnick said. When Kwon attempted to collect money for the damage, Powell refused to show the dairy owner any identification and started to drive away, he said.
After Kwon threw a rock at the motor home’s windshield, Powell ran over Kwon and drove away, Watnick said.
Powell, who was arrested after a chase, is free on $25,000 bail, Watnick said.
Kwon, who at one time was in critical condition, is now in fair condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Watnick said.
