Woman Killed as Car Dives Into Tidal Basin

WASHINGTON — A car plunged into the Tidal Basin today near the Jefferson Memorial, killing a woman inside the vehicle.
Police, passers-by and firefighters tried to rescue the woman, but officials at the Washington Hospital Center said the unidentified woman, apparently in her 30s, was pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m. Police did not know why the car left the roadway, cut across about 50 yards of grass, then plunged into the basin.
