Polluting Paper Mill in Mexico City Shut Down

MEXICO CITY — The government has shut down a polluting paper plant in the southern part of Mexico City and turned its water supply over to nearby residents.
President Miguel de la Madrid attended ceremonies Monday for the closing of the Loreto and Pena Pobre paper mill, which has been operating since World War II.
Mexico City has been plagued with a thick blanket of smog, caused by emissions from factories and cars. It is widely considered to have the world’s worst air pollution.
