Bren Center Rising on UC Irvine Campus
December completion is scheduled for the $13.5-million, 5,000-seat Donald Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine.
The three-story, privately funded facility--named in honor of its major donor, the chairman of the board of the Irvine Co.--will be used for basketball and other indoor sports, as well as concerts, lectures and cultural events.
Bren personally contributed $1 million, while his company contributed $500,000 to the project. The center was designed by Parkin Architects, Los Angeles, the firm that designed the Wooden Center at UCLA. Saffell & McAdam Inc., Irvine, is the general contractor.
The center is being built into a hillside, visually reducing the height of the arena, providing an “appropriate human scale” to the campus environment, according to Lloyd Ross of Saffell & McAdam.
