Leaders of the world’s 65 million Anglicans have urged the U.S. Episcopal church to delay any move to name women bishops until wider study is made of the potentially divisive matter. Primates of 28 self-governing Anglican churches, meeting in Toronto, asked the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert A.K. Runcie, to appoint a working group to canvass reaction from all sectors of the Anglican Communion on the issue and implicitly urged that the matter be deferred until the next conference of the world’s Anglican bishops in 1988.
