John Lucas did not show up for the Houston Rockets’ practice Wednesday afternoon, but Rocket General Manager Ray Patterson said Thursday that he was told Lucas missed the 1 p.m. practice because of “family problems.”
“It was a routine missed practice, which results in a fine,” Patterson said. “That’s it. I’m satisfied with his story.”
Lucas, who is averaging 15.4 points and ranks sixth in the NBA in assists with an 8.8 average, was waived early last season when he missed a team flight to Oakland and subsequently failed a urinalysis test for cocaine.
According to Patterson, Lucas assured the Rockets he was “completely clean,” and would take a drug test. The club declined.
