The leader of Colombia’s most powerful guerrilla group, the leftist April 19 Movement, was killed by police in an apartment in a middle-class Bogota neighborhood when he tried to resist arrest, officers said. Alvaro Fayad Delgado was fatally shot “in a confrontation” after officers had surrounded the building, Gen. Gustavo Gonzales, Bogota police commander, said. Fayad, a civil engineer in his mid-40s, took control of the group also known as M-19 in February, 1985. It is the most active of four guerrilla groups in Colombia.
