Industry : Peer Counseling Conference
Workshops on child abuse and anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder in which victims sometimes starve themselves, are among activities at the second annual Peer Counseling Conference on Friday at the Industry Hills Conference Center. About 1,000 educators, medical professionals and high school students are expected.
The conference, sponsored by the California Peer Counseling Assn., the state Department of Education and the county Office of Education, is an effort to promote the concept of peer counseling, under which students in grades 10 through 12 are trained to counsel fellow students. Through the program, used in about 50 school districts in the state, students may be assigned to peer counselors through their school’s counseling office, said Dr. William Turner, a consultant with the county Office of Education who is coordinating the program.
The keynote speaker is Tim Hoover of Hoover Consulting Services, who will talk about “Living With or Dealing With a Chemical Dependency Problem.”
