The World : Ecuador General Gives Up
Ecuador’s former top general, who seized an air base after he was fired forinsubordination, surrendered to end a five-day stand off, the government announced. Gen. Frank Vargas Pazos, the former commander of the air force and chief of the joint military command, has placed himself under the president’s orders, a spokesman for President Leon Febres Cordero announced. Quito radio stations later reported that Gen. Luis Pineiros, the country’s defense minister, and Gen. Manuel Albuja, the army commander, have resigned as Vargas had demanded.
