RANGOON, Burma — The Shwedagon pagoda here, the glistening shrine once said to have more gold on it than the amount in the vaults of the Bank of England, is getting another coat of gold.
On Sunday, 2,562 gold plates weighing 2,722 troy ounces will be placed atop the tapering pagoda as part of an elaborate 13-day Buddhist ceremony.
The gold was bought by the shrine’s trustees with donations from the country’s Buddhists. The pagoda has already been coated by almost two tons of gold.
