GUATEMALA CITY — Deputy Defense Secretary William H. Taft IV wound up a tour of Guatemala and called for medical and other aid to refugees of the country’s prolonged guerrilla war.
“There is an urgent need to send aid to the approximately 4,000 refugees, especially clothing and medicine,” Taft said before his departure Saturday.
During his visit, Taft traveled to Triangulo Ixchil, a zone of frequent guerrilla activity about 70 miles west of the capital. He was accompanied by Guatemala’s military chief, Gen. Hector Gramajo.
