KATIE’S SONIC GUMBO
Few bluesicians are less obscure than Houston-born pianist-vocalist Katie Webster, and even fewer are less deserving of such obscurity. Friday night’s 45-minute first show at McCabe’s found this one-time teen-age session prodigy segueing from classic blues to boogie-woogie to swamp-pop hits such as Phil Phillips’ “Sea of Love.”
Webster, 47, wowed the crowd with her dryly humorous patter and her equally humorous, two-fisted flights of pianistic fancy. When she’s not spotlighting her ambidexterity, Webster likes to season her sonic gumbo with offbeat, off-hand quotes from any number of surprise sources.
