SEOUL, South Korea — Riot police fought about 2,400 students demanding the resignation of President Chun Doo Hwan at three Seoul universities today as six U.S. congressmen arrived to assess chances for greater democracy in South Korea.
Witnesses said more than 1,000 riot police and plainclothesmen stormed the campus at the state-run Seoul National University, firing tear gas to break up a crowd listening to speeches by anti-government student leaders. Students also clashed with police at Ewha Women’s University and the Confucius Sung Kyun Kwan University.
