The chief of the Southern California Rapid Transit District says the bus system is headed for a “catastrophic” future because of RTD’s inability to meet the needs of a rising population. RTD General Manager John Dyer told a forum of transportation officials at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Los Angeles that the system serves tens of thousands of new riders each year, but is facing increasing money troubles. Dyer urged public and transit officials in major cities to work with private industry toward developing more privately operated transit systems.
