Democratic Club Endorses 2 Culver City Candidates

The Culver City Democratic Club has endorsed incumbent Richard Alexander and former Chamber of Commerce President Andy Weissman in the nonpartisan race for two City Council seats in the April 8 election.

More than 60 club members Wednesday listened to five of the seven candidates speak on traffic congestion, fireworks sales and the proliferation of mini-malls and fast-food outlets.

Alexander, Weissman and Richard Nielsen, a deputy attorney general, are Democrats. Incumbent Ron Perkins and Jozelle Smith, a retired columnist, are Republicans and appeared only for public exposure because non-Democrats are not eligible for endorsement under the club charter.

Candidates Fred Ellis, a retired contractor, and Lisa Tracy, a security supervisor, did not attend.

Alexander, who has served three terms on the council, said the endorsement was critical to his reelection campaign because the club is one of the city’s few influential citizens organizations.

“It’s very important. The Democratic Club is the most powerful group representing the people of Culver City,” he said.

Weissman, an attorney, said the main issue in his campaign will be the “integrity and judgment of our public officials.”

Alexander and Weissman have also been endorsed by Councilmen Paul Jacobs and Paul Netzel.
