Layoff Notices Being Mailed, but Process of Deciding Who Must Leave Might Take Months

Layoff notices are being mailed to 39 full-time physical education instructors in the Los Angeles Community College District, spokesman Norm Schneider said Friday.
In all, 143 notices to full-time faculty members are being distributed, Schneider said.
“Some have been mailed, some are being prepared and some are waiting to be signed,” he said.
The district has until May 15 to decide if it will go through with its proposed layoffs.
Determining who would actually be affected by layoffs is a process that could take months to complete, Schneider said.
“I imagine there could be ripples from this reaching all the way until the fall semester,” he said.
David Wolf, Pierce College president, offered a more conservative estimate.
“We’ll have a pretty good idea of who will be affected within the next few days,” Wolf said. “But it’s a very complicated process, and it could be three or four weeks before we know exactly who would be affected.”
Layoffs, if enacted by the board, would be determined by seniority. Faculty in 30 disciplines would be affected.
