Deukmejian Backs Legislation on Seat Belts for School Buses
- Share via
SACRAMENTO — Gov. George Deukmejian said Tuesday that he supports legislation that would require school buses to be equipped with passenger seat belts if a proposed study by the Highway Patrol finds they improve safety.
“From what I understand of it, I would certainly support that bill,” the governor said of a measure by Assemblywoman Gloria Molina (D-Los Angeles), which has been approved by the Assembly and is pending in the Senate.
The proposal would require the installation of seat belts on new school buses starting July 1, 1987, provided that the CHP study showed that they would reduce injury and the risk of death.
