Quakes Jolt Mexico, Guatemala

TAPACHULA, Mexico —  A series of 10 earthquakes rumbled through the rugged Mexican-Guatemalan border region near a smoldering volcano today, causing some damage but no injuries, officials said.

The quakes occurred near the smoking 13,388-foot Tacana volcano, which straddles the border of the two countries, 525 miles southeast of Mexico City. The strongest quake measured 5.0 on the Richter scale and was followed by two quakes measuring 3.6 each and others of less intensity, authorities said.
