A gunfight that erupted over the apparent killing of a hog by hunters left a hog rancher and a hunter dead near Redding. Jessie Bishop, 28, of Mountain Gate, and his brother, James, reportedly had been ordered by rancher Conrad Chance, 44, to stop shooting at hogs on the Chance ranch and get off the property. Shasta County sheriff’s deputies said the brothers apparently shot one more animal before leaving. In the ensuing shoot-out, Jessie Bishop was killed. Chance, struck in the head, died later at a Redding hospital.
