Bishop Desmond Tutu said the United States could end apartheid in South Africa by applying the same type of pressure it uses against Nicaragua. “If your country were to apply the policies it uses toward Nicaragua in South Africa . . . apartheid would be over yesterday,” he told a news conference at Los Angeles International Airport. Tutu, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, did not publicly advocate violence or military intervention but said the United States’ “almost obsessive concern” over the Marxist regime in Nicaragua could apply to South Africa. The Anglican leader, who has visited several universities during his fund-raising campaign through the United States, spoke earlier to several local media executives, saying he approved of a proposal passed by the Beverly Hills City Council to move the South African Consulate out of the city.
