Textile Workers Union Head Francis Schaufenbil
LAWRENCE, Mass. — Francis Schaufenbil, longtime president of the United Textile Workers of America International, died Wednesday after what union officials said was a long illness. He was 70.
Schaufenbil started as a wool weaver in the Midwest and later helped form the Wisconsin Council of Textile Unions and was elected its president in 1940.
In 1941, he was appointed the UTWA international representative in charge of the Midwestern area and was elected international vice president in December, 1941.
He was appointed director of the UTWA Woolen and Worsted Department and assigned to the New England area.
Schaufenbil was elected international secretary-treasurer of the union in 1957 and president in 1972.
He also was a member of the Management-Labor Textile Committee of the Department of Commerce and an American textile expert for the State Department Trade Union Exchange Program.
