The Helfeld Exit
While no public agency deserves an award for its compassionate dealings with the poor and homeless, the Community Redevelopment Agency, under the direction of Ed Helfeld, has by far the most outstanding record.
Unlike similar entities in other cities that have addressed the problems of the poor with “bulldozer therapy” the CRA has approached the problem of Skid Row with creativity, compassion and openness to the community. Money and resources have been made available for housing, jobs and services. And a commitment has been made that the poor will not be forced out.
The recent dismissal of Helfeld in a blatant power play places this entire program in jeopardy.
His loss will be sorely felt by those of us who work among the poor and homeless of Skid Row.
