Robert M. Johnson will become publisher and chief executive of Newsday on Jan. 1, succeeding David Laventhol, who becomes chairman of the newspaper, the parent Times Mirror Co. said. Johnson will retain the title of president of Newsday and will assume responsibility for all aspects of the paper’s operations.
