1,600 Sign Up to Design Kent State Memorial

KENT, Ohio — More than 1,600 people have registered to compete to design a memorial for the four students killed by National Guardsmen at Kent State University in 1970, competition officials said Monday.
The memorial will be located at a wooded site near where the students were killed in a hail of gunfire from Ohio National Guard troops on May 4, 1970. Some of the students had been protesting U.S. bombing raids in Cambodia. The winning designer will receive a prize of $20,000, officials said.
