Less than half the law students who took the July bar examination passed, the State Bar of California reported. Of 7,668 applicants who took the three-day test, 45.4% passed, up slightly from the 41.8% pass rate for the July, 1984, exam. The new lawyers will bring the total of actively practicing attorneys in California to about 90,000.
