San Diego
An elderly San Diego man died Sunday afternoon after he was hit by a car while crossing a street in Southeast San Diego.
Harvey Nance, 73, a retired heavy-equipment operator for San Diego Gas & Electric Co., was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital shortly after the 1:30 p.m. accident at Federal Boulevard and 48th Street, authorities said.
San Diego Police Lt. Richard Bennett said Nance, walking slowly with a cane, had strayed outside the crosswalk when the car approached. Bennett said the driver, who was identified by the San Diego County coroner’s office as Magdalena Contreras of San Diego, swerved to avoid Nance “but did not swerve far enough or soon enough.”
Bennett said the driver was held on suspicion of misdemeanor manslaughter, which he described as the crime of killing someone negligently with a car.
