UCLA Defeats SMU, 2-0, Advances to Semifinals of NCAA Soccer Tourney

Dale Ervine and Hubert Rotteveel scored second-half goals and goal-keeper Dave Vanole recorded his eighth shutout of the season Sunday as UCLA topped SMU, 2-0, in an NCAA Division I quarterfinal playoff match at UCLA.

The victory qualified the second-ranked Bruins for the NCAA semifinals for the second consecutive year. UCLA (18-1-4) will meet top-ranked Evansville next Sunday at a site to be determined.

Evansville (21-0-2) advanced by eliminating Penn State, 1-0, earlier Sunday.

Ervine gave the Bruins the lead for good by scoring two minutes into the second half. Mike Getchell was credited with an assist on the play.

Rotteveel gave the Bruins an insurance goal by scoring in the 87th minute on a penalty kick.

UCLA outshot SMU, 12-6. Vanole and goal-keeper Hank Henry of the Mustangs were each credited with five saves.

SMU finished the season with a 17-5-1 record.

The victory was the 100th career win for UCLA Coach Sigi Schmid, who’s completing his sixth year as the Bruins’ head coach. His career record is 100-17-14.

Hartwick College and American University will meet in the other semifinal match next weekend. Hartwick ( 17-2-1) advanced by beating Boston University, 1-0, while American (17-2-2) downed South Carolina, 2-0.
