KREMS, Austria — An Austrian wine merchant was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison Friday for lacing 50,000 gallons of wine with a toxic chemical used in anti-freeze.
It was the toughest sentence handed down so far in connection with the Austrian wine scandal, in which wine was doctored with diethylene-glycol to make it sweeter.
The chemical can cause brain and kidney damage. The scandal, which came to light last summer, has crippled the Austrian wine industry.
