Vanlandingham Wins International

Vanlandingham, in his first start on the turf, scored a wire-to-wire victory in the $400,000 Washington D.C. International at Laurel, Md. to give the United States its first win in four years.

The 4-year-old horse, ridden by Don McBeth, held off a mild bid by Yashgan in winning the 1 1/2-mile test by one length in a steady drizzle.

Yashgan finished a nose ahead of Jupiter Island, with Helen Street another 1 lengths back. All three horses are from England.

The winner was timed in 2:35 3/5 and paid $16.20 to win.

Win of the United States, who does better on firm courses, finished fifth and Strawberry Road II, the 6-5 favorite from France, faded to eighth in the 10-horse field after making a bid on the final turn.
