Lawyer Assails Military Government in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria — Tunji Braithwaite, a radical lawyer and former presidential candidate, Sunday called for an end to military rule and a return to democracy in Nigeria.
It was one of the first challenges to the military government of Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who seized power in a coup just over two months ago.
“Military rule is an aberration, brought about only by the failure of the democratic process induced by serious crimes on the part of those holding power in trust for the people,” Braithwaite told a news conference.
Nigeria has known two periods of civilian rule since independence in 1960, both of which were ended by military coups.
