Conrad’s Whale
Cartoonist Paul Conrad certainly didn’t consult Rand-McNally when he drew the cartoon (Oct. 27) of the whale swimming “The Wrong Way up the East River.”
Conrad’s whale is swimming south, the right way, (nearest access to the ocean) down the East River. To swim up the East River he would have to negotiate Hell Gate and all of Long Island Sound to reach open water.
By the way, the East River is not a river at all, but a narrow sea-water connection between Long Island Sound and Upper New York Bay.
