Simi Valley Loses, 27-7; Monestime Runs Wild

Thousand Oaks scored the first five times it had the ball to defeat Simi Valley, 27-7, in an important Marmonte League game Friday night at Thousand Oaks.

The Lancers kept Simi Valley’s high-powered M. J. Nelson off the scoreboard in improving their league record to 3-1. Simi Valley is also 3-1 in league play.

Nelson, a senior running back, was held to 66 yards on 14 carries by a tough Thousand Oaks defense.

The game’s running star was Marc Monestime, who collected 169 yards on 28 carries.

Thousand Oaks (5-3 overall) took the opening kickoff and went 70 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown.

Monestime, a 5-10, 175-pound sophomore, ran six times for 54 yards on the drive.

His 28-yard run to the Simi four-yard line set up Rod Steven’s one-yard scoring run with 7:24 left in the first quarter. Mike O’Brien’s extra point made it 7-0.

Simi Valley, which turned the ball over five times, fumbled on its first possession.

Mark Hatch coughed up the ball at his own 13, setting up another Thousand Oaks touchdown.

The score came when quarterback Dan Nagelmann faked the handoff to Joe Cruz and rolled to his left from four-yards out for a touchdown.

With 3:22 left in the first quarter, Thousand Oaks led 14-0.

That quickly became 21-0 when Nagelmann hooked up with Mike Trevathan for a 10-yard score.

It was quite a night for Trevathan. Not only did he have five receptions for 73 yards, but at halftime, he was also selected as the school’s homecoming king.
