Woodbridge Routs Costa Mesa

Dave Townsend scored two touchdowns to lead Woodbridge High School to a 31-14 Sea View League victory over Costa Mesa Friday night at Irvine Stadium.

Townsend rushed for 139 yards on 10 carries as the Warriors improved their league record to 4-1 and 6-2 overall.

Quarterback Mike Juarez, making his first start in place of the injured John Yurkovich, completed 5 of 8 passes for 126 yards and connected on his first four, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to John Evers on the Warriors’ first play from scrimmage.

Costa Mesa, which fell to 2-3 in league play and 3-5 overall, had tied the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by Tyler Rydell with 2:53 left in the first quarter.

But Woodbridge took a 14-7 advantage when Dwayne Armstrong scored on a 62-yard run on the Warriors’ next possession.

Townsend’s 21-yard run with 6:13 remaining in the second quarter put Woodbridge ahead, 21-7.

The Mustangs cut the deficit to 21-14 when quarterback Paul Rodriguez scored from one yard out with 2:40 left in the second quarter.

Woodbridge countered with a 30-yard field goal by Jeff Smith with 3 seconds left in the first half to take a 24-14 advantage at intermission.

Townsend’s 2-yard run with 11:38 left in the game concluded the scoring for Woodbridge.

Rodriguez completed 8 of 27 passes for 108 yards and was intercepted once.

Woodbridge, which totaled 272 yards on the ground compared to 85 for Costa Mesa, also got a solid effort from Armstong, who finished with 74 yards on 3 carries.
